The Northern Arts Council is excited to announce the Emerging Artist Grant Program, an initiative designed to assist emerging visual artists from Forest, Langlade, Lincoln, Oneida, and Vilas Counties. This grant program awards an artist or group of artists with a grant of up to $3,000 in an effort to promote the arts in accordance with the NAC's mission to develop and sponsor art and cultural programs.
The NAC seeks to award visual artists who demonstrate a financial need as well as a commitment to their careers and artistic communities. The funding is intended to further a recipient's artistic practice, encourage career sustainability, and expand their artistic exposure in the community. Applicants cannot be enrolled in a degree seeking program or utilize grant funds for business purposes. Applicants must be 18 years or older.
A primary purpose of this grant program is to provide artists with access to opportunities that can affect positive change in their lives, and in turn, the field at large. As an organization that values cultural diversity, we hope through this new initiative to benefit a population of emerging artists who may be in need of financial assistance. We encourage a broad group of emerging artists and a diversity of practices in all areas of visual arts and artistic practice.
The NAC defines "emerging" as those early in their artistic careers (regardless of age), who are gaining momentum, and may be at the critical point in their career development when this support would have the most impact. These artists demonstrate potential in their practice by taking risks and pushing their work in dynamic ways, but are not yet considered well established professionally by indicators such as major gallery representation, significant exhibition history, awards and commissions, or sustaining an income derived solely from art sales.
Artist applicants for each grant cycle must submit a completed application containing a narrative of introduction, images of previous works or works in progress, a description of current work related to the grant award, and an explanation of financial need (how the grant monies will be utilized). The recipient of the grant will be determined, based on the applications submitted, by the NAC Executive Board.
Applications for this grant will be accepted between October 1st, 2019 and December 1st, 2019. Notifications will be sent by email after the Northern Arts Council's Annual Meeting on January 9th, 2020.
